Search Engine Optimisation

Having been optimising websites for 20 years, I have experienced the major changes in digital marketing, how the search engines have evolved to the sophisticated search tools they are now, and the advent of social media.

Search Engine Optimisation (or SEO) is a key part of your online marketing – and isn’t just about keywords either!

Many sites don’t rank in the search results nearly as well as they could for a number of reasons:

  • the site has been poorly designed and doesn’t get indexed properly by the search engines

  • the content and how it’s structured on the site needs improvement

  • keyword research hasn’t been done or is poorly targeted

  • ‘meta tags’ are missing or not written properly

  • very few quality links point to the site

  • the site hasn’t been updated for a long time

  • the site isn't mobile friendly, or is slow to load

  • there is no overall marketing strategy

Addressing these issues can go a long way to help improve a site’s visibility in the search engines and the visitors it attracts. Don’t forget most traffic to websites still comes from the search engines so this is one area you can’t afford to neglect.

The search engine optimisation process includes the following activities:

  • review of your website and its current performance in the search engines

  • review of current traffic trends

  • keyword research to find the best keywords to target for your products/services

  • recommendations for ‘technical’ improvements and site architecture/content structure

  • optimisation of key pages of your website with suggestions for content improvement, rewriting and adding to content where appropriate

  • benchmark rankings/analytics reports

  • ongoing reviews of performance and suggestions for further improvement

Website Audits

Before you even begin an online marketing campaign, it’s a good idea to start with an audit of your current website and marketing activities.

Why is this important?

  • it will give you a starting point as to where you are now and what it will take to get to where you want to be.

  • there could be technical issues with your website which may prevent it from ranking as well as it could.

  • your content may need re-writing, or adding to depending on who you want to reach.

  • your web presence could generally be poor or not targeted enough towards your audience.

  • you can find out more about how visitors currently access your website, what they are looking at (or not looking at), and whether those visits are leading to sales and enquiries.

What does the Audit include?

The website audit includes a number of checks that enables me to find out more about your site, including:

  • how it has been constructed and if there are any technical issues.

  • how the website currently performs in a search.

  • review of the content on your website and calls to action.

  • which websites link back to your website and where improvements could be made.

  • if you’re making the most of the social networks.

  • a review of your web analytics and how visitors access and interact with your website.

The audit will include a set of recommendations that you can use to make  improvements yourself, enable me to put together a strategy with you or help you make some of the improvements necessary with some of my services.
