What Does a Virtual Assistant Actually Do?

Sam McArthur

First and foremost a Virtual Assistant (VA) can take all sorts of forms, it’s unlikely that no two VAs will do exactly the same thing!

Many VAs set themselves up to specialise in skills based on their past work experience. This means that finding the right VA must be a match for the duties you require them to carry out and their particular skillset.

We all come from different walks of life and backgrounds and the skills we acquire over the years will vary. Some VAs may come from a sales background and will excel in generating leads for your business, handling customers, sales forecasts and helping to on board new clients.

Others may come from a finance background and specialise in bookkeeping and accounts. They may offer a mix of services along with their expertise in accounts.

Others will have more general admin skills which almost all businesses need. These skills will include diary management, database/CRM updates, creating reports, presentations, handling emails, being a point of contact for clients. The list goes on.

My background is primarily a digital marketing background, but alongside that I’ve run my own business for a number of years so also offer general admin skills. On top of that I’m a part qualified bookkeeper having completed the AAT Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping. This means I can also help my clients with day to day bookkeeping on systems such as Xero, Freeagent etc. I can’t do the end of year accounts, but can at least make sure accounts are up to date and invoices are sent and paid!

For growing small businesses, a VA offers essential help enabling business owners to focus on growing their business, not being bogged down with admin which drains your time and resources. Even if your business is more established, you may not want to employ someone to do these jobs as employment increases costs and overheads, not least the growing NI bill!

If you would like to discuss more about how I can help, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
